Inner Workings Of The Stanford Sophomore Mind Part 2

Miracles:

Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever. (Alma 26:12)

Jess. Every week affects my life, but some weeks linger in my memory longer than others. These past two weeks will linger. I believe in small miracles in a stronger sense then ever before. I have been the direct recipient of more than mere consequences.

Tuesday I had an assignment due later that day that I had not yet completed. Because of my weaknesses, I had left myself little time. I made a list of what I needed to get for this project: posters and sharpies. I went to work to fulfill my time commitment and found to my astonishment both posters, sharpies, and a cafeteria tray. My project idea was for a cafeteria tray and that tray appeared.

Thursday I had two finals one in the morning and one in the evening. Twenty minutes before the exam I decided to print out old final exam solutions to have as an equation sheet. I got to the exam to find out that the professor had repeated a question and that I had the answer for one fourth of the exam. Later on in the exam I realized I had not printed what I had initially wanted. I had printed out old midterms not old finals.

Friday I awoke at eight o clock when my airport shuttle left at 7:30. Floored I didn't know what to do, besides call my father. I ran to the next shuttle in the hope there would be a seat available. I knew that even if I made this next shuttle I would only have very little time to get on the plane. After sitting on the shuttle that I only had a ticket for a hour before, I arrived at the airport fifteen minutes before schedule. I ran to security to find that security was waiting for me. They escorted me to a line where there was not one person a head of me in line. I arrived at my gate one half hour before departure time. Then the plane arrived 20 minutes late.

These are small thoughts, on a worldly scale insignificant, on a personal level most significant. Spiritual experiences are personal. Temporally, I definitely packed light. I might not be able to keep the lack of clothes a personal experience.

Jess, I have thought so much about what to write to you, and I believe this is the most appropriate.

To my Stanford Soph I would say: Definitely most appropriate!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MATTY!!!

In honor of Matty’s birthday I thought I’d share some of my favorite and most tender thoughts about my brother and friend.

My brother Matty is the best friend a sister could ever ask for. While we fought as kids, he would protect me no matter what the consequence. I was the tag-along! When we were young, it bothered Matt but later in life he didn’t seem to mind. Matt would take me fishing on the creek almost every day. He would always hook the fish and I would reel it in. This kept us busy for a long time. When we would go home he would always say that I caught the fish. Not many guys would do that for their sister. The boy even would paint my fingernails. Matt has always been an example to me, he is good at anything he does. In all the humility of a Berry, Matt is truly an exceptional athlete and I will never quite catch up in this life but he better watch out when I get that right arm perfected. If Matt did something; I always wanted to do it too. In the summers we would get wet on the tramp with the sprinkle. Well Matt would take off his shirt, so I would take off mine. My Mom would surely tell me to put it back on, and I thought “Matt has his shirt off why can’t I”.

Matt drove me to school everyday, and can I just say that it is a miracle that I lived! Riding to school daily with Matt was an adventure I would never trade; we both are lucky to still be alive. I think that is when I really felt Matt was my friend not because I was sister. I was a nerd with not many friends, and Matt let me tag-along again with him and his friends. His friends became my friends; Matt took me under his wing, never caring whether people thought he wasn’t cool for hanging out with his sister. Matt is the only person I know who sent his sister flowers before the opening game of softball season wishing them good luck. I admire many aspects of my brother: the three back-to-back home runs over the Madison fence, the distance he drives the golf ball, his humor, his driving skills, his constantly growing gun collection, his multiple ESPN worthy baseball plays (yes we have most on video if you’d like to see), his dutch-oven chicken and potatoes, BUT while all these and more make Matt the amazing person he is what I admire the most is the way he’s always been my friend through thick and thin.

Happy Birthday Matty! Here is to many more years of thick and thin!

9 1/2 Reasons Why Seattle Is A Must

A friend of mine sent me this today when she "just ran across it" (she is a HUGE Seattle fan) and mostly because I knew my favorite Seattle native would love it and I am already getting excited for Seattle I share. :)

1) No state income tax
2) Washington shares a border with the great state of Idaho
3) Seatle is close to 3 amazing national parks (Mr. Rainier, Olympic National Park, and North Cascades National Park)
4) Great job opportunites with Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google offices around
5) In 1995 it was ranked #1 as the most honest place by readers digest magazine
6) Great public transportation in the city
7) pike place fish market (they throw fish there)
8) There's a temple in Seattle, just off I-90. The Seattle Temple is also one of five temples featuring an angel Moroni statue holding the gold plates (the other temples are LA, DC, Jordan River, and Mexico City).
9) According to a Census Bureau study, Seattle tops the list of America's most educated cities, with more than half its population 25 years and older holding at least a bachelor's degree.
9.5) I know I had a tenth reason. hmm... something to do with baseball, tragic love stories... aww shucks. I can't remember.

Madness Is In The Air

How should one spend their March? I believe that question is rather simple: Embracing and basking in the Madness that is the NCAA basketball tournament. Entering the pools, filling out the brackets, picking the No. 12 to beat No. 5 (always my favorite to see), the upsets, the Cinderellas, the buzzer beaters, the dark horse you bet the farm on, the thrill of watching 6+ games at once (and not feeling guilty at all), and watching young talent reach greatness. Will Utah State make it past the first round? The odds are higher that I'll meet Tiger Woods one day. Will Florida State perform as well as they did Championship week? I am praying for a Yes. Who will become the national champion? L'Ville or the true blue North Carolina? If you haven't caught the thrill of MM, just experience upon the madness and see if it will grow within you, a little basketball never hurt anyone. I do love the madness this season brings!

Mad Love To The Birthday Girl

There are many reasons why March is one of my favorite months. Daylight savings (which equates to more light to golf longer in the day), Spring (or rather for me the beginning of summer), 31 days in the month instead of 28 days, Spring Training starts, MARCH MADNESS, and more importantly Keena Walters was born in March!!! What a classy girl and constant as the Sun that shines each day!

Jess Berry Quote of The Day!

God does answer prayers. Sometimes the answer is “yes,” sometimes the answer is “no,” and sometimes the answer is “you’re an idiot.” But He always answers prayers.

What I Come Home To....

Yes that is right. On any given night when you come to Park Blvd you'll find some variety of a comedy show. Be it "Michael Jackson" night like last night or Karaoke night on Monday and watching AR see "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" there is always something hilariously ridiculous going on at Park Blvd. What will be next? Will they top Southern Night? Tickets are available upon request. Special events are typically held on Wednesday, please book one week in advance.

Welcome MJ!

Happy Birthday T. Hawkins

Shocked: By the flash, the amount of chocolate raspberry truffle I was consuming, or by T. Hawkins putting the moves on me? You decide. What a womanizer!
At least I am the first for his upcoming 26th year. Don't worry he got his token Happy Birthday kiss (not pictured). Happy Birthday Tim! Hope the next year is as great as your boyhood ever imagined being! ;)

Why I've Traded My Snow Boots For Golf Shoes Year-Round

My cousin, Lorin, having a case of Spring Fever in March in the snow. Whereas I am here in California and golfing in my golf shoes and a T-shirt in March (and every other month in the blessed year). I heart California! PS...not bad form in your boots, cousin!
